Ostenil® Plus Injections

Two Ostenil Plus products

Ostenil® plus injections are hyaluronic acid injections for knee pain, injected directly into a joint space to help reduce pain and stiffness caused by Osteoarthritis. The fluid is similar to our own joint fluid and so replicates lubrication and shock absorption and works by restoring the normal  balance between the breakdown and production of hyaluronic acid. Mainly used in the treatment of knees.

What Ostenil Plus and why use it?

Ostenil® Plus injections are hyaluronic acid knee injections, our joint fluid contains hyaluronic acid (HA) which helps to absorb loads, lubricate the joint and forms a protective barrier over the joint surfaces.

The HA in our joints is continuously broken down and replaced, but when a joint is affected by Osteoarthritis this process is disturbed and breakdown happens faster than production. As a result, the synovial fluid stops working properly.

Introduction of man-made HA into the joint stimulates cells in the joint lining to produce HA (Smith and Ghosh, 1987), therefore stabilising the balance between breakdown and production .  When injected into joint fluid, the HA in Ostenil® Plus works by providing a barrier to inflammation, increasing shock absorption and joint lubrication and stimulating the natural production of HA in the joint.

Is it safe?

The hyaluronic acid in Ostenil® Plus is very pure and is manufactured using a process called fermentation. It contains no animal proteins, which means it is very unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. The addition of Mannitol (a simple sugar derivative) to Ostenil® Plus hyaluronic acid knee injections allows  them to work for longer and more efficiently in the joint, enabling effective symptom reduction with a single injection. Ostenil® Plus has been extensively tested, and has not been found to cause any serious side effects.

Is it effective?

Hyaluronic acid knee injections have been recommended by the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO) for people with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis or for patients with severe osteoarthritis who are either unwilling to have or contraindicated for total knee replacement surgery or wishing to delay the surgery (Bruyere et al, 2016).

What can I expect if I opt for an Ostenil Plus injection?

If you decide to have treatment with Ostenil® Plus, it will be injected directly into the joint affected by osteoarthritis.  You may not notice any benefit immediately after your injection, but should gradually experience a reduction in pain and stiffness and gradual improvement in function.  Studies suggest the improvement in your symptoms can persist for six months (Borrás-Verdera et al, 2012), depending on the progression of the degenerative change in the joint being treated, your activity levels and your individual circumstances.

When the effects of your hyaluronic acid knee injections begin to wear off, you can safely choose to have another injection. Thereafter, you can continue with Ostenil® Plus therapy whenever necessary.
